Online Storytelling Tips

  • We’re digital pioneers. We’re doing something entirely new: mixing audio, video, pictures, text, graphics and more.
  • Think big. Don’t let technology limit your ideas when you’re brainstorming. When you have your idea formed, pare it down as resources, time and tech become obstacles.
  • The audience rules. Who’s your audience? How are they accessing their digital content? What content are they craving, needing, seeking? Answers to those questions are vital to delivering relevant content.
  • Storyboard. Plan and plan some more. Then be willing to change your plan to fit your needs.
  • Own the project, then share it. Someone needs to have the vision and drive to get the ball rolling, but you must get other people involved.
  • Content wants to be free. Create content that can be consumed on the Web, on mobile devices, on e-readers or wherever the audience wants it.
  • Ask the community. Let those viewing your content know that you care about what they think. Are they encouraged to submit comments and ideas? Can they post their own content? Your community can help you create better digital experiences.
  • Innovate. We’re only seeing a small fraction of what we’ll someday be able to do with digital content. It’s the most exciting part of the media world right now. Nothing is set in stone. Experiment and make your mark.
